WOW: Back to Work on Lily Rose

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays

I don't actually like deadlines, but they do have their advantages. The biggest one for me is that when I have to get a quilt done, I usually do it. I've been looking at my diary for the year ahead and its occurred to me that if I don't make and finish Lily Rose this month, then I won't be finishing it before 2016. And given that it will be on display in April this year, that just won't do!

My biggest problem is that I take too much on. I always have 'hungry eyes' concerning my quilts. My biggest solution is that I'm a perfectionist, so even when I'm creating at the last minute, I can't settle for less than perfect and this means that my quilts are always a high standard of workmanship- whether I make them in leisurely afternoons over the course of a year... or in a week or two.

What about you?
Last minute race or slow and steady pace?

  3. I'm opposite of you Esther I am not a perfectionist when it comes to quilting. I do not enter shows though like you do and write patterns etc. I make quilts because I like them and do not want to pay someone else to do them for me. I like well put together quilts but if something doesn't come out perfect it doesn't bother me.

    1. I think we're all different and that there is beauty in that difference. I'm not bothered or judgmental about how anyone makes their own quilts as long as it is true to them. Having started out as a fashion designer back in the days when designers also had to make accurate size graded samples, accuracy, workmanship and measure is my 'thing'. I can't rest until it's 'right' as far as I see it and I get great pleasure from those little details. Although now, through applique, I do appreciate the hand line and naive style more than I ever did at any other point in my life.

  4. G'day Esther (and Happy New Year.)
    When I got a comment many years ago from the now DH that my 'lines didn't match' on a skirt, I realised I HAD to be particular about my sewing. And, I always do my best work when I have an impossible deadline. So it is off to get the final borders on the DD's Wedding Quilt so I can clear the decks for the 15th!!!
    "See you then" - Cheers Wendy

    1. I think a DDs wedding quilt is one of those once in a lifetime quilts. How wonderful. See you when you're ready ;)

  5. I am rather like you in that I prefer perfection and I hardly compromise, but there have been occasions. I just took a fabulous workshop from Karen K Buckley, an amazing applique artist, and I am more anxious than ever to get to making this year. Her techniques have given me a new confidence to get my points sharp and my inside turns more precise than ever. I hope I can do it. Your work is always inspiring so just trying to decide on which project to do first.

    1. Yes, you can do it. It's all a matter of practice, preparation and patience. Personally, I am learning new things ALL the time. You wouldn't even believe it. Take my LE Compass for example, I made 4x of those last year (!!) before I got a single one right. A few years ago, I would have made the first one perfect as I was doing more piecing back then. I am simply out of practice. But it is doable, you just have to work towards it. Can't wait to see what you do...

  6. Hi Esther
    I have learn't the hard way regarding deadlines, now I don't commit till the quilt is finished. This gives me time to make any changes as I go along and to always commit to my best workmanship.

  9. Esther, I'm definitely with you on the "hungry eyes" . I have so many quilts I'd like to make that I'd need three lifetimes to make them! I find that I now enjoy the process much more than I used to, so I guess I'm a slow and steady pace person. You have provided me with so much inspiration this last year as I've worked on my love entwined center.

  10. I do a lot of last minute race, but I shouldn't! I have 2 quilts now that are spoken for when they are done...have I worked on finishing them? Of course not. I think I need to clean up from the holidays before I drag tables out for quilting.
